It’s been a long..loooong time since I wrote something here.
A lot has happened since, but it’s nothing that I would blog about..basically this boils down to being a fresh dad and other RL stuff and therefore not having a lot of…spare time. ;)
So what can you expect here in the future? Well… to be honest, not a lot. I’ve quit WAR, because it was too time consuming and couldn’t entertain me enough for the little time I’ve got. I’m still gaming though…it’s still MWO, but even for this I’m not having enough time and so I’m basically pugging most of time and don’t run with a proper (4 or 8 Mech) group. Which is a shame as this game relies heavily on communication and team work and fighting in a premade versus another premade is a lot more fun.
Nevertheless MWO is still my choice of online game right now.
Am I planning to return to WAR? Most likely not. Most of the time I have quit a game I didn’t get back to check it. I don’t see any plans for WAR in the future which might get me interested again.
Is there anything else I’m looking forward too? Hum.. not Elder Scrolls Online, but Mark Jacobs .. CSE … is having my interest in Camelot Unchained. Turning more old school as I get older ;)
My only problem is that old school MMO’s demand time, but I’m definitely interested in the project and what they plan, which is still a bit blury, but the general direction of design seems interesting.
So what now? Well.. to be honest. I don’t have a clue. Maybe this blog turns into a MWO or CU blog..or I forget about this specific game blogging and write about games I play or that I’m interested in, which I’m already doing as you can read right now. The term doomdiver fits my playing style in any game ;)
Another option would be to close this blog and move on.. I’ll keep you updated.–
I should check the MWO webpage more often. Some days ago there was an announcement from Piranha Games on Operation Inception.
For you who are too lazy to follow the link here is a summary which is not really shorter than the original text ;)
It’s sorta pre-order-thing even though this is the wrong choice of words as MWO is f2p. You can order 2 different packages from 19th of june and get an early access to the game on july 17th. Furthermore you get a special title. The packages differ only a little.
For 30$ you get the veteran stuff, which includes 1 month of being a premium account (exp+currency boost) and 40$ value of ingame-currency.
For 60$ you get the elite stuff, which includes 2 month of being premium, 80$ of ingame/shop currency and a Mech with C-Bill (i.e. ingame currency) boost.
This would be very interesting..if..there would not be such a little ..clause..
The closed beta and OPERATION INCEPTION assets will enjoy support only in North America.
C’mon.. you really don’t want money from Europe? The perception in the US of the financial crisis in Europe must be that it’s catastrophic here ;) Here is still some money.. and a lot of die hard Battletech/Mechwarrior fans who would love to spent some money for those packages.
If the game is starting like this..I’m not sure how well the overall support for any non North-American Mechpilot will be… but maybe I’m just not understanding it right and/or exaggerate a bit.. maybe.
Most of the folks who follow the game will probably already watched those videos, but anyways.. I stumbled upon them just right now and want to link/show the videos IGN has done together with devs from Piranha introducing some basics facts about Mechs and the gameplay of Mechwarrior Online.
I find it interesting, even though the interviewer is asking some..stuff which is quiet obvious and known since the start of the universe, but the game is to be introduced to new folks so I don’t want to be too mean about it ;) So here are the videos
First a general introduction..so if you have no clue what I’m babbling about all the time when I talk about MWO..watch this ;)
Some stuff about light Mechs.
and a short walkthrough through the Mechlab:
Looks good so far.. my only problem is that I don’t have a clue what Mech I want to use ;) Light ones seem very interesting..but I always tends to use Heavies in BT… ;)
Piranha Games presented the next Mech design for MWO.. it’s the Raven.
This is good news in several ways.. The Raven is a Mech packed full with electronic gadgets, ECM and such. This can be really fun when you have in mind that scouting will play a significant role in this game.
In the tabletop game I like this Mech as it is quiet robust for it’s weight. It also features a nice weapon loadout and the electronics..are just marvelous. 35t is on the upper end for pure scout Mechs, but this Mech provides good scouting and target marking in the tabletop game and will surely do this in the online game too.
My only gripe is the design of the concept art.. I’m not totally hyped about all the previous designs and this one is no exception.. to be honest it’s one of my least favorite overhauled designs. It differs quiet heavily from the original design as the new one is more slim and long..not so much resembling the look of a raven like the old one…but maybe I’m just used to the old models and too old for something new ;)
Well..today is the day.. Free character transfers from Drakenwald to Karak Norn or Badlands will be enabled.
Now comes just a bit of brainstorming why I chose a specific server..you may already know this and can skip the next two paragraphs without missing anything ;)
I will transfer my characters to Karak Norn as Badlands is believed to be quiet zergy and there is some lag which kills positioning and other crucial things in a fight. Both things were tested by me when I played my Destruction alts on Badlands. The server is fun from time to time, but the overall quality of fights is.. not enough to make it a fun trip.
Karak Norn on the other hand is more small scale fight oriented..sources say. The problem here is that it’s a bit too competitive .. I don’t want to go 100% all the time. I’m old and lazy and sometimes just want to beat on something without too much effort. So the perfect server for me would be a mix of both ;) Which is what WAR should be about anyways.. Large scale fightings and intense small scale fights..both options possible and not excluding each other. Because of a huge power gap (gear, effective ranks, …) and the way renown is gained in the most efficient way it seems impossible to combine both styles to play the game. ..
So.. this may be the last character transfer I will do in WAR. I expect GW2 to have a big impact on WAR’s server population and I’m not sure if this min/max-ing small scale fighting will keep me happy enough for a longer time. Which is quiet odd as I don’t like to zerg, but I’ve grown tired of “cc+kill in 2s-fights”.. I’ve grown tired of seeing people use every single allowed and illegal option in a fight..hell.. there are high-rr groups out there who don’t want to fight, but are scared that they might die and get a bad kills/death-ratio. In the past couple of years, especially after the 1.4 patch, the focus shifted more towards stats, purple numbers and E-Peen (ok..latter being always out there, it just got emphasized as there are several people out there thinking that they are cool because they “one-shotted” some low-rr enemy ;) ).. there are just a handful of people who constantly push for a fight no matter what the opposition is. *tip to the hat to those out there*
War is everywhere?
The next few weeks might still get interesting as there are many more new enemies… I still expect a rough adjustment time and I’m not sure if I’m really willing to adjust. So time will tell if Karak Norn will be my new home in WAR or the graveyard for my Order chars.
There is a silver lining at the horizon though.. it’s not about WAR, but the open beta of MWO starting in the summer ;)
One aspect of MWO that the dev’s of MWO talked about in the past was the Information Warfare and no one had a real clue what was meant with this phrase. As January shall be the Information Warfare Month Piranha games wrote another dev blog, this time given more information on Information Warfare.
I’m lazy and won’t summarize the post.. ;)
It’s a nice read..not too wordy or complex, but it makes me interested in that aspect of the game. Information warfare is all about knowing where your enemy is and what his current state is (Yes.. I summarized it.. a bit ;)). There will be several ways of how you can obtain that information and/or make it more difficult for your enemy to get this information. This gives more options for strategy/tactics in a fight ..and this is nice. Complex tactics tend to be really bad in pug situations though, but I think that this game will tend to push you towards Merc Corp/Faction (aka guild) groups anyways.. everything else would be a too shallow game. It will not be feasible for a solo’er to fight for control of a planet..though solo’ing is possible in some way I think that this is not the richest experience in the game. It’s about teamwork, which is imo always good for a PvP focused game.
So there are multiple ways to search for an enemy and as much ways to counter it.. which strongly enhances the group synergies. In general this all sounds quiet good, though I remain a bit skeptic if it will be balanced in the right way. I hope that there will be some loop holes so that not every information can be gathered at all times. There should always be the possibility to surprise someone, otherwise it can get boring/unbalanced.
Premades will already have the advantages of voice chat stuff.. but I have to search the forums again to find a hint how premades are handled. I think that I’ve read something about that..Well anyways.. the more I read about the game the more I’m interested. At least I get to play one year without the Clans.
oh..and I’m not going to play in a Merc Corp. I will be earning many Loyality Points with House Kurita … ;)
Though the title might imply that..I didn’t interview him ;)
The whole interview with Randall Bills can be found on the official MWO page.
“Who the.. is Randall Bills?” you might ask. To be honest I didn’t know him before that interview, but it’s a nice read. For you lazy folks out there.. he’s ..I quote here.. ” Continuity Editor and Fiction Content Manager” for MWO. He’s involved in MWO in a way many bloggers want to be involved in a game they like. He comments on proposed stories for MWO by Piranha Games. That’s a job for lore freaks and he is one..When you read the interview you will notice that. (Let’s hope that Piranha is listening to him). Need a proof? Well..here are some imo noteworthy quotes
When being asked what his favourite part of the job is he answered..
..And despite over 15 years working on BattleTech, it still remains one of my biggest geek-loves…the inner 14-year-old in me still yells that titanic metal robots stomping across alien worlds and blowing crap up never, ever gets old…
And this is so totally true.. BT is touching for some reason the inner-child/Teen. It’s ridculous.. big, heavy Mechs fighting against each other .. some story lines are quiet heavily loaded with stereotypes..but yet it’s still fascinating blowing things up with a PPC, no matter if it’s the Tabletop or a Computer game ;) Sometimes I am surprised by myself.. When I drive on the Autobahn and there are some rolling hills and I think “Oh..that would be such a cool picture if now at that hill a Mech would appear and shoot with some lasers and LRM..”.. as I said..ridiculous, but nevertheless fun and entertaining. ;)
And there is another quote where he get’s a loud “Yeah you’re right!” from me..
MWO: Is there any part of MechWarrior you’d love to just take straight out of canon?
RB: I’ve said many times over the years that if I’d been there the game mechanics of the Clan weaponry would be very different. It’s not just how powerful those weapons are, but that it seemed from the get go to violate the story aesthetics as presented.
Here were these great, in-your-face warriors and yet they had weapons that allowed a player, in game to simply walk backwards and fire at crazy distances to down your enemy. When we introduced the Clan Heavy Lasers years ago those were more along the lines of what I thought the Clans should’ve had all along…really dangerous and powerful weapons, but shortish range, where the Clanner would be in his element, able to take down 3 and 4 enemy BattleMechs in a whirling dervish of expert maneuvering and markmanship.
This is something that’s also been an issue to me. Clan’s want to get into close combat, but have weapons which are exceptionally well at large distances.. it just doesn’t fit and broke a lot of the balancing in the game. So it doesn’t fit on two sides of the game..lore/aesthetics and game balance. Now we should wait how Piranha Games is handling this stuff. Clan weapons exist (note: see below *)..and you will most likely slot them in your Mech as soon as you can.
I don’t want to get too much into possible mechanics there..there have to be more details be announced on it before I comment on them.
One thing he also mentioned is the race to Assault Mechs..and that Piranha is really trying to make even light Mechs important, so not everyone tries to grab an Atlas or so. This is some tricky aspect..
(*especially in two years when Clans will arrive. Remember: MWO is going on in real time..So when the game launches it’s 3049, one year before the Clans attack. One year after the release “surprising” things will happen at the Periphery.)
.. so many improvements (an expansion) is in sight, bringing new …way more powerful..weaponry and Tech. Both giving more bang to more heavy Mechs and making it more a necessity to have some more armor, i.e. getting heavier. Well..we are before facts for the game exist..so it’s still time to lean back and see what Piranha is planning, but I’m really curious how they want to make every weight class in that game ..meaningful.
Just a final note… I wanted to explain why I highlighted the last word. Sorry to disappoint you, but being meaningful on the battlefield doesn’t mean that your Locust can kill an Atlas. This won’t happen.. your Locust will have a role on the battlefield to make it easier for your team mates to blow the Atlas up. This will have to get a team game if every weight class should be meaningful. And this game will …just like WAR..be painful if you solo it.
