I’m quiet busy for the next two weeks.. can’t even log in to play really. So this blog will be a bit more silent than it is anyways.
I don’t even have time to rant about Skaven working together with Order. Yay..this is unfair! ;)

you have a severe case of server lag, when you die in ORvR, release and after 5s some funny red numbers scroll above your head.
This happened yesterday when I was in ORvR..I had no idea how many folks were in the lake, but the server decided that it was too much ;) Everyone had terrible lags.. stuns lasted for several minutes.. spells didn’t fire off at all (even though the client was finished with the animations). It was so bad that we decided to do some PvE instead of trying to grab some renown while the Renown-Bonus lasted.
There is something good to point out though.. There are lots of players still active..they just need some impulse to get into the lakes. Now only the servers need to support this ;)
Well. 2 year anniversary and we all got renown bonus for the weekend.
Hooray… except. I was away for the weekend, because RL has a higher priority than gaming and so I had nearly nothing from the bonus. The rest of the guild made around 400k of renown/day..*eyeroll*
Well renown will come sooner or later.. In my case later, because this is the second renown bonus weekend I missed. I am just wondering why it’s always a weekend. Some folks will have more time for gaming on weekends..some more during the week. Restricting the bonus to the weekends seems somewhat unfair.. *shrug*
Second thing that I don’t like about this.. It’s an anniversary and all we got was some renown bonus which is turned on by changing one variable. This is nothing special to celebrate the fact that WAR is two years old. Last year there were cloaks and other stuff..This year..not even a handshake.
Nevertheless.. this fits into he uninspired “more, stronger, farther”-mentality Mythic has shown in the past couple of month .. (just look at the RvR pack and some balance changes..sov-gear etc..).. It looks like the new and different approaches are gone and we get all the stuff we are used from other games, which is imo no good thing..
Am I bitter because of the missed renown? No.. I’m just asking myself were WAR is going …
Erdknuffel wrote something (caution: German blog ;) ) about missed opportunities… His post was focused on the (German) Fan/Community sites and their bad.. performance concerning WAR. Most of the time those portals are dead, have old information or just translate the herald. Adding the usual trolling on multi-game sites this makes those sites not very appealing for getting you dose of information about WAR.
I never much cared about the German Gaming/Community portals.. It was just too much work to get some useful information out of them. Therefore I didn’t even followed them at the release of WAR and nowadays they are even less useful. Most if the time I was searching at US sites for some information. This is part of the reason why I don’t write this blog in German..
There is something related to this.. problem of inactive/bad German Community portals. I’ve noticed that Mythic has somehow changed their effort in .. going out there. There are some events happening.. like GamesCon and other conventions when there is a fan get together with Andy and Dev’s.. but in general in my perception Mythic is currently really low on community activity. From a German point of view you don’t see any Dev-reaction at all to things that matter over here.. (not even a translation of a “we look at it”). The whole contact of the German community is going through volunteers like Erdknuffel and Ayleen. Even the activity in other forms seems rather low from the side of Mythic. Gone are the days of some viral marketing via blogs and even the production videos get sparse. Well.. with a patch every 3-5 months there is not always some patch to talk about, but a short “state of the game”, behind the curtain or similar video.. like the producers letter is for the herald would be nice.
This may be a reason why some people believe that WAR is in maintainence mode. A more upfront contact to the community might lessen that. Tell the people what is happening and not only wait for questions which are forbidden to be answered because marketing has told you so. Best example is the RvR pack.. the information about it is “There will be a RvR pack”.. this is not something to get excited about, as there is absolutely no information other than “There will be more Renown ranks available and more equipment”. That’s not only a short-sighted design decision concerning the game .. but also hype-wise nothing were people stand up and cheer “yeah.. that’s THE thing”. Maybe we will never see such nice things like the introduction to LotD and the marketing Mythic has done at that time.. maybe this times are gone…
Oh.. and finally.. Why this title? As a reaction of his post and the general positive replies to it, Erdknuffel started a German Community ..site.. WAAAGH.de (it’s in German of course). Can you believe it..the url was still free?! ;) It’s not even beta yet.. but the activity level seems good and I hope that this will get the new home of the German WAR community.. Maybe even Mythic will recognize it as this ;)

This news in the herald about the live event NPC removal due to effect on server performance made me.. think again. What the…?
It’s one NPC and they can’t fix it and it decreases server performance in the Capitol city region? This makes me rather speechless. Well.. not so speechless like the never-ending lag in front of the library in uncontested Altdorf. I guess this one will never be fixed, because now it’s already a tradition to have a lag/fps-issue in front of the library. You should think that a open texture is easily fixed..well maybe not. The game is quiet full of those things. To me it seems sometimes as such things were never checked and therefore persist and some even exploit it..
I’m atm not sure where the game is heading, but I’m rather sceptical that it will be towards better fights (i.e. zone design and performance) and more towards unnecessary fluff (RR100, better armor, more of this and more of that to collect)..
Seems quiet negative? Well.. yes. The game is heading into a direction I don’t like ..but let’s see. Maybe Mythic surprises me.
DoK’s being invisible (not only for me, but also for others with no lag problems like I have) and just popping out of stealth when hitting you…

This is something I have to ask myself often since patch 1.3.6. Most of the time it’s really difficult to say what is going on, as I experience some severe server/client lag and the loss of my castbar doesn’t improve this. As a healer it’s easiest to compensate this stuff by spamming group-heals, but this is by far not the most effective way (especially with my spec), but better play at 80% effectiveness than at 0 %.
I am used to client side problems as my rig is..bad..really bad..Pentium D bad, but it seems to me that the performance of the game is totally luck and more based on chaos theory than on setup of your PC. Sometimes the game runs smooth for me, but others complain about lag..most of the time though it’s the other way around. Funnily I have no problem with ctd’s when there are a lot of players around, but others with better machines do get kicked..
Whatever..this is not what I wanted to write about. On of the things that bothers me is that this server/client lag is frustrating. In a RvR-game you die..you die a lot, but I want to know why I die and I want to die, because the opponent is better, not because he/she had some luck and hat less lag.. The client performance needs to increase..not the obtainable RR. It’s also no fun to see how you kill someone, because he can’t do anything because of the amount of attacks (not damage) you deal and the lag this produces on his/her machine.
Things start to get really frustrating when the game gives no feedback.. I guess every healer experienced it that the heal got through (gcd fired of, ap got reduces), but the health-bar did not change in any way (sometimes even the combat log doesn’t show it, but let me not start about the combat log ; )). This hp-bar reaction should have been improved in patch 1.3.6, but I think it’s still nowhere near good.
Another thing that is related to the lag-issues..this is the point why I even started this rambling..
Sometimes the enemies behave strange. Yesterday I saw a Sorceress strafe in mid-air for nearly 20s ..Sometimes melee dps hit me from the top of a wall while I’m standing way below them for several seconds and so on. This is most likely related to lag and therefore the wrong positions my client is showing me (I don’t think that there are that much cheats/hacks around as I experience weird stuff).. So I’m sometimes not really knowing what my own character is doing, but more than often I have no clue where everyone else is, because my client is just showing the wrong positions. This has nothing to do with my hardware, but is a fault by Mythic’s Engineers. Oh..btw. I’m not talking about the monster called Zerg vs. Zerg..This even happens in small scale fights like scenarios or roaming through less populated zones.
So what this game needs more than anything else is performance improvement.. Maybe than those “X,Y..are all cheaters” will get less, because people now understand and see what is happening and don’t just die and have no clue why. Also melee range might get one digit sized again ;)
