I was just wondering what happened to ChaosCast? ..
Are there any new episodes coming or is stopped because Keen went to Wow, Snafzg is “mildly” frustrated with WAR as it is right now (though newer posts seem a bit more optimistic) and Syp is not all three persons in one (at least I think so ;) )..
I think there is enough to be discussed at the round-table..
where you want to give a fellow player in a scenario the “/facepalm-award”.
There are scenarios where for an unknown reason you get stomped in the ground by the enemies and there are scenarios where it’s clear why you lose.
Just one example I experienced lately .. I think everyone has similar ones as it happens rather frequently in most scenarios:
Talabec scenario in T3.
What it is planed to be:
a) Your side picks up the bomb and deploys it at the enemy bombing point. Preferably you take the route which is farther away from the enemy spawn point and not the route that leads near it. Easy plan..
b) The enemy has got the bomb, so you defend your bombing point and deploy dots on the bomb-carrier, knockback enemies, etc.. and hope that the enemy runs past your spawn point, so that you can get easy reinforcment.
What it can get:
mild /facepalm.award .. lets call it bronze-award:
a) People get confused which path to take and run past the enemy spawn point. This can happen, is understandable and no big deal. Just hope that they get used to know the map and the next time they have the bomb, they will take the other route.
b) People have no idea what to do with the bomb and stand at the crossing, hoping to get an idea. Hum… Can happen to newcomers and such.. No big deal, though it’s quiet counter-productive.
wtf-award .. aka silver-award:
People don’t defend or attack.. they keep on fighting small fights rather than caring for the scenario-objectives. In this case..they don’t get the bomb and try to deploy it or they just don’t defend..This makes me just..speechless.
Now we reach the gold-/facepalm-award:
I call it bad-trained-mourkain-soldiers. Why mourkain? Well.. they grab the bomb and run straight into enemy resistance, because they have that little, shiny thingie indicating that they are currently in god-mode ;)
This makes me wanna bang my head on the table. ;)
Me (Runepriest) and an Ironbreaker stood at the crossing and he’s got the bomb (actually he just came from the path leading to the destruction spawn-point and so I thought he had resistance over there and wanted to run the other path). He kept standing there..doing nothing. I was confused and wanted to write in /sc that he should follow me.. At this moment destruction came to the crossing and the ironbreaker ran straight into the enemy group..So no deploying of the bomb this time.. ;)
I experience this ..oh-no, facepalm-award worthy things here and there.. Sometimes I can overlook it and just blame their inexperience with new scenarios and such.. Sometimes (like this rank27 IB) I just can’t understand why this people even reach that rank.. Where is natural selection?! ;)
As long as it doesn’t happen all the time this is bearable, but if it happens too often I get frustrated and just don’t do scenarios which require such tactical behavior (though I really like Talabec).
Scenarios I play in T3 and like: Tor Anroc, Temple of Isha, Talabec Dam,
Scenario I play if my frustration level is not tested before: Doomfist crater
Scenarios I don’t play in T3: Black Fire basin, Highpass Cemetary
Until yesterday I still sticked to the losing side no matter how bad they performed..but yesterday was a new low-point where I wanted to leave the scenario.. Premiere! ;)
Are there worse thing happen than ignoring objectives or doing just completely wrong stuff? Tell me.. For what action do you want to award the /facepalm-award?
Is it better to take someones soul rather than his blood?
(Just popped up in my mind as I was thinking about the pre-launch discussion about soul and blood essence. As most of you know, some people here in germany have a problem when games contain too much blood and such.. So there was the problem with the DoK… he drains blood essence and afaik it’s called soul essence now, just to not have to use the word blood.)
Lately I didn’t post so much here.. Either I had so much to do at work or I was playing WAR.. both being not too bad ;)
Some things happened which I want to summarize in no particular order..just what pops up in my mind:
Book of Grudges hit their 500th post and will stop the blog due to not having enough time for it.
I really enjoyed the blog and will miss it, but I understand it. Bloggings draws away some time from RL or gaming time and as the day has only 24 hours you’ll have to choose. I did it, played WAR and didn’t write so much here. It’s similar to what Spinks wrote in the comments. It was much fun during pre-launch to speculate and watch the community. Nowadays it’s imo mostly negative posts out there. Some are true, some are just rants …
WAR can be war!
WAR really shines when people are willing to fight, no matter what the loot is… I reported that the offering of loot just for keep takes is leading to people avoiding confrontation and this still hold true, but when people ignore this the game can get really fun. Lately we defended the keep at High pass, which was fun because the reinforcement just arrived at time. The enemy was at the keep lord and we could stop them from killing him. After the first gate respawned and we were a nearly full warband we started the counter-attack on the keep in Talabecland. On the way there we killed some unlucky destruction players who were running solo around. The fun started when we were at the keep. Destruction gathered forced and there where around two groups of defenders. A real siege started with us setting up 6-7 canons and them setting up several siege weapons..After a long fight we were at the lord and I think the enemy didn’t expect us to fight the keep lord directly. No fancy tactics..just damage on the keep lord. We managed to take the keep, but just as the fight was over I had a CTD. This was really fun and imo how this game should be played.
Talking about CTD .. Performance.
I’m really unhappy with the performance of WAR. CTD’s still happen and I’m lagging for which reason I don’t know. I’m playing with an patched OB-client on a Pentium D (2x 2.8GHz), 3GB RAM and a Nvidia Geforce 9800GT. Nothing really exceptional good, but not too shabby i think. But I can hardly play on balanced settings with lightning turned off and only displaying self-effects; which is something I really don’t like. Lightning effects are cosmetic, but I would like to turn them on. The spell effects I want to see because I consider it to be important to see what the others are doing, but there is no way in ORvR that I can keep t
I mean.. During normalplay and most of the time in scenarios I can play without performance issues, but in ORvR or if there are too many players (a warband standing close together is already too many) the game turns into a slide show.
The lags seem to be to some extent server-lag, because during prime time I get typical server-lag issues; people warping, mailbox takes forever to open, loot-windows don’t close, but also frame-rate droping, etc..
I really hope that patch 1.1 will help there..
Get to know the other classes.
I’m really an alt-a-holic ..and this is for several reasons. It’s fun to experience a game with different approaches. Especially in WAR the game experience is very different for every career. It’s also good to know what you allies can do and how they play from own experience .. Sometimes a tank has to run into that group, but sometimes it’s better for him to stay back though he can’t do anything. While it’s fun as a tank to run into a bunch of enemies and hit them, it’s not fun as a healer to back this tank up and getting the prime target for those enemies (especially if you have to run behind the tank without having the ability to properly position yourself). Learn to understand the play-style of your allies to get the best teamwork..not only to maximize effect, but to maximize survivability and therefore fun. No one enjoys running back from a spawn point or getting rezzed too often ;)
Send me a post-card..
Syp is going on vacation.. I hope that you and your wife enjoy it ;)
Almost forgot the metal..
Heavy metal live-event got changed and I really appreciate this. Now you get a new task every day, but can do the already given tasks from previous days. I really like it not being forced to login every day or getting punished when the scenario just didn’t pop-up during my playing time. The new/temporary scenario is also much fun.. Though I still don’t really like live-events, this one is quiet fun.
Hum.. “Participate in the Reikland-Factory Scenario”…
Seems like an easy task.. but I failed to complete it yesterday ;)
After I came back from sports yesterday, I needed some time for my parrots, eating and watching a little bit of England vs. Germany football match.. So i logged in at around 22:00 and in the two hours I played Reikland factory didn’t pop up once and so i couldn’t complete the daily task..
As a compensation I had some nice ORvR action as destruction wanted to take some keeps from us ;)
Normally I don’t stay in queue when participating in ORvR, but yesterday I did and it didn’t make any difference.. So I’m curious which task I may fail to do today ;)
I surfed around on WAR analytics.. and checked the “Archetype“-page and then began to wonder.
When just looking at the archetypes played most it has following order (percentage-wise):
- Ranged DPS (well..no wonder with many Bright Wizards out there)
- Melee DPS
- Ranged DPS
- Melee DPS
Oh..stop..Tank careers are the least played archetype on destruction side and on order they got played more often than Melee DPS? Where’s my cliche that order has no appealing tanks and destruction has the “cool guys”?
I know that this ranking is hardly a proof for anything, but I think that the distribution of careers is somewhat interesting. Something to think about..
Watching the current posts in blogs or forums, there is much discussion about numbers.
Be it either rank, renown, exp, damage, healing ..loot..contribution (hello Regis ;) ) ..
What I’m currently missing.. and that belongs somewhat to the “incentive for ORvR” is Realmpride(tm). Before release this was stated as an incentive to fight the other realm. It was “we” against “them” ..
Now it’s more of an I, I, I… My Renown, my dps, my rank, my equipment. The Realmpride is totally absent.. it’s missing in action. People max out their char, avoiding some ORvR, because they slow you down or don’t drop any loot. Its even at a state where you let the enemy take a keep, just to be able to take it back and get the loot bags. And this is one reason why ORvR is somewhat doomed…
Realmpride has no chance to be established as long the majority is greedy or self-centered. It’s legitimate to care about your char and look how you can progress well, but I find it rather odd that you simply don’t do stuff that is fun because it slows down your progression.
You could make workarounds to that.. Like introducing something like Darkness Falls as Keen proposed or increase the rewards for fighting like Mythic is doing atm, but this are just workarounds. I like the idea of Keen, but it has nothing to do with Realmpride. It will lead to more ORvR (and this leads to more fun), but it’s just again because I want to get the phatest loot, not that we want to crush the enemy realm.
I think that missing of Realmpride has something to do with the lack of immersion in WAR. This fast paced in-out stuff just don’t let you delve into the world. You are not connected to it, so why should you care if a keep is getting attacked; the scenario queue just popped and you can have some pvp-action there. I like it that Mythic reduces the amount of victory points gained by scenarios in T4.. Combined with Regis‘ idea about keeps adding VP over time instead of fixed amount this might lead to more ORvR action..
Maybe it’s all a design dilemma. Fast in-out type of stuff or something that is more time consuming and involving … Realmpride was doomed right from the beginning. It just can’t survive when confronted with MMO-gamers.
